II When Art Meets the Markets - II

The Star in Auctions
Any painting by Walter Spies would see a bid of over US$ 1 million. Paintings by Raden Saleh, Luna or Mayeur could also be tendered with excellent price. They are all stars in auctions and constitute the main source of revenue for me. The Southeast Asian art market is highly diversified; therefore it makes little sense to see Southeast Asian art collectors as a category. Of course the situation might change, but not for now. The collectors who collect the first-generation Indonesian local artists are basically not inclined to pay heed to the artworks by contemporary artists. This is a phenomenon that cannot be addressed for the present.
As we have mentioned earlier in the article, the news statement released after Lee Man-fong’s paintings had broken a record seemed to lead the public to think that Southeast Asian art market outperformed that of China. In my opinion, such a condition was decided by the preference and liking of certain collectors, or by the distinguished style or marvelous techniques of that specific painting. Reasons vary when it comes to becoming stars in auctions. An intriguing question to ask: if we take 20 Lee Man-fong’s paintings for auctioning, would all of them be scrambled for, regardless of the quality? I don’t think so. The situation might possibly change in the near future. Even very famous artists, like Chu Ming or Chao Wu-chi, cannot be bargained with a good price for each of their artworks. The Southeast Asian art market is basically a small one, and is yet to expand in the years to come. Even some world-famous artists of this region don’t enjoy the privilege of selling at an excellent price for all their paintings. Some believe the Southeast Asian art market has soared, yet the truth is some artists of certain fields have seen a decline in price. An Eurasian artist Locatelli’s artworkGambuh Dancer, selling at S$ 900,000 in 2005, was sold at HK$ 6.6 million in Hong Kong recently. In the past, Indo-European artists were stars in the Southeast Asian art market, yet the situation began to change since the rise of Southeast Asian art.
