In 2005, the first auction for Southeast Asian paintings was held in Singapore. With such a short time of growth, it remains a baby market till the present day. The Southeast Asian paintings have been supported mainly by Indonesian paintings, which, as US$ 5 dollars would be sufficient for a piece of painting over Europe in the past, have become a coveted commodity in the auctions of today. Yet the price of an artwork is not the only factor that matters; rather, what really matters is how to locate unearthed artworks and introduce such works into the market and enthrall the small group who are enthusiastic about art. Meanwhile, it’s also important to observe the market changes over the last 6 to 12 months. Take Sotheby's auction this past October. Shortly after the auction ended, a press statement was released to inform the audience of a skyrocketing price by some artist or other. Such news might be spread very quickly over the Web, and trigger opinions and sentiments of the people involved in or concerned about art market, hence leading to the conclusion that Southeast market is facing a rapid growth as Lee Man-fong’s artwork could sell at US$ 4.4 million under the constrained economic climate globally. Yet what’s the point for the auctioneer to make such a statement? Now auctioneers, especially in Asia, have become an institution that makes influence and decides the direction of a trend, which may bring negative results in some way. It would be better for an auctioneer to follow the trend instead of leading the direction of development in art world.
