Anxiety Aesthetics in this Age of Restlessness--a Tribute to the Younger Generation

The Ideology behind Art Creation—a Turbulent Existence
“Who Am I? Such a simple question is never easy for the Taiwanese to find a proper answer. Over the past century, Taiwanese people have been entrapped in three-fold identities, namely the Taiwanese, Japanese and Chinese, due to most unexplained circumstances.”
Dear Taiwan, published in October 2011

For Taiwanese people, identity has for long been an issue waiting for further elaboration. It is not something too sensitive or unspeakable, but a problem that becomes even more complicated, ambiguous and undefinable owing to the longtime struggle of ideologies such as Nationalism and the political realities. Or to put it this way: Taiwan has formed a very intimate yet subtle relationship with the mainland China over the last decades, which, although seemingly conflicting and antagonistic, is in nature subtly balanced. Hence most Taiwanese people have been stuck in a China Complex, when very few of them (especially political leaders) can assert a definite direction toward which Taiwan is progressing. To be independent or to return to the greater China? In the political context of Taiwan, nothing but obscure, equivocal murmurs can be heard.
