Yan Lei, Limited Art Project, 2012

The dOCUMENTA (13) Reports – II, Highlights in Asian Art

While the visit to Kassel is finished, the next step is to self-reflect and to search for a context that can develop and realize the cultural position of one's own country.
As the curator, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev states, nowadays it's not the geographical, cultural or identity differences being pursued, but the Universalism that transcends the differences; given the fact that globalization has long ago broken the “Euro-centrism” status. The derived issues of Globalization have not been resolved, however, and no one can ignore many corners of the world where suffering still exists. In particular, in recent years the Asian economies have boomed while the European ones have shrunk, therefore the quinquennial Documenta indeed provides regional context. In response to the expectation of a broader and more open-minded point of view in which to perceive this world, to solve its problems, this report will centre on the representation of Asian art at this year's Documenta by exploring its unique language that reflects the current situation of society, politics, economy and culture.
